Family Service Corps

We are an AmeriCorps program, sponsored by Independence Health System Butler Memorial Hospital, and funded by AmeriCorps and PennSERVE. AmeriCorps members commit to a term of National Service and are assigned to local non-profits throughout Butler and Lawrence counties.

AmeriCorps is a federal agency connecting individuals and organizations through service and volunteering to tackle the nation's most pressing challenges.

In Butler, PA...

In the heart of Butler County, thousands of families struggle with access to healthy, high quality foods. With a nearly 30% poverty rate, 10% food insecurity rate, and no grocery stores within a 10 mile radius, families are faced with a challenging decision of visiting nearby stores to purchase food products that are highly processed or taking the local bus that limits riders to 2 grocery bags per trip. Oftentimes, the nearby store is the most efficient and economical and families are forced to consume these high calorie foods that are directly correlated with a long list of long term health ailments including diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). While food insecurity remains a top concern for families, many also find limited access to other resources such as women's health, housing, mental health care, and clothing.

How We're Working to Help

We recognize that addressing food insecurity in our community is a critical need. Thus, we partner with local nonprofits to place AmeriCorps members that are positioned to assess food security needs, provide access to healthy food options, and connect community members with additional resources to improve overall health. These efforts will provide support to 3500 community members with 500 of them reporting long term and sustainable food security.

Additionally, our communities’ local veterans and their families struggle with a nationwide trend of homelessness, mental health, and substance abuse. Through our Veterans Helping Veterans work, we partner with local nonprofits to place AmeriCorps members that are positioned to provide safety and trust for veterans reengaging in civilian life. These efforts will serve 350 unique veterans with 100 identifying a positive behavior change and better quality of life.
